Sakura was struck by a truck and killed instantly, so ending her dreams of becoming an idol… or at least that’s what should have happened. Reanimated as a zombie, she has one last chance to make it!
What did you watch and why? We all know that I can’t help myself when it comes to zombies. It doesn’t matter what it’s about, if it’s got zombies, I’m there. Admittedly, I was a little worried going into this one. I had not seen any idol anime shows before and, well, let’s just say it’s not my normal type of show.
What’s it about? Sakura was a high school student on her way to try out for a new pop idol group when she was hit by a truck and killed. She wakes
She flees the house only for a police officer to call her a zombie and start shooting at her. Well, it turns out the police officer was right. Sakura is a zombie. A strange man saves her and takes her back to the house with the zombies! Kotaro, the strange man, informs her, in no uncertain terms, that he is putting together an idol group and she’s part of it.
Somehow, he has collected deceased idols, entertainers, and a biker girl, revived them, and it molding them into a group so that he can save his home prefecture of Saga. Sounds easy enough, right? WRONG! There’s no easy way to establish an idol group. They will have to pull every trick imaginable and they’ve also got to get the dance moves down.
What hooked you? Zombie Land Saga has got some very dark elements and they are hilarious. I found myself laughing pretty much non-stop with this series. The utter absurdity of it is brilliant and there are so many uncomfortable moments I couldn’t turn away. I watched this as a chance series and was blown away by it.
What was your favourite scene? There was one episode where Saki really got into things. Firstly, they made a commercial for her favourite fried chicken takeout. Then, they entered a bizarre sporting event which involved a lot of mud. So much laughing, especially when Tae threw herself from a rope swing and fell apart.
All the other girls, scrambled into the mud, trying to put her back together again before anyone noticed. I should say, on top of all of the hilarity, there are some really nice moments between the girls as they confront their former lives. We just need to find out more about Kotaro.
What was your least favourite scene? My least favourite thing in the series, and it’s a pretty minor thing, was the animation during the songs. Parts of it remained in the same 2D style, but the choreograph parts switched to 3D CGI which always pulled me out of the story for a moment.
Who was your favourite character? It’s been Saki from the start and that hasn’t changed one bit. She’s firecracker, always ready to explode. I love how she doesn’t take any crap from Kotaro and regularly gives it back to him. She may be a little terrifying but she’s always got her friends backs.
Who was your least favourite character? This is a tough one. At first, I was sure it was going to be Kotaro, but he grew on me. Even his screaming and over the top
Which character needs more screen time? After Saki and Sakura, Yugiri was my favourite. I loved it when she goes full courtesan and starts slapping people around. She’s also probably the hottest zombie I’ve ever seen and that’s not a sentence I ever thought I’d be saying!
Is it similar to any other anime you’ve seen? I’ve already said that I haven’t watched any other idol anime, so nothing there. In terms of surprise enjoyment, I’m going to put it with Chio’s School Road. They are nothing alike, but both have a fairly absurd comedic style which was right up my street.
Would you like another season? I really would. I also never thought I would say that, but there you go. If nothing else, I’d love to know more about Kotaro and how he managed to bring the girls back from the dead. We also need to see if they really can save Saga or not! My theory is that Kotaro was driving the truck that killed Sakura, which is why he included her in the group.
What elements of the story inspire you? I think it’s going to be the willingness to try something out there. Maybe, mash together a couple of completely different genres and see what happens. Sure, it may not work, but if it does it has the potential to be that something different that people are always looking for, just like Zombie Land Saga.
