Who’s behind the door? That’s all we want to know. Is it Mother or Sister Krone, maybe it’s Ray or Norman. Damn it! Who is it?
What did you watch? I’m really enjoying this series. The tone is dark and sinister, but slow and tense. Much like these openings of my reviews. I know you’re here to see what I thought of the episode, but I keep you waiting for a couple of paragraphs, because of the spoilers.
In all honestly, I don’t entirely trust anything we’ve seen or heard so far, so who knows what’s going on and what’s a spoiler or a red herring. Anyhow, that should put us in the clear, so let’s get on with it.
What happened? Last week’s episode left us with a nail-biting final moment and thankfully we picked up exactly where we left off. Don and Gilda had gone on an ill-advised exploration into Mother’s office and found the secret door. Then as they stood and stared like a couple of rabbits caught in the headlights, the office door slowly crept open.
My instincts last week told me that it wasn’t Mother or Sister Krone, and thankfully for Don and Gilda, I was right. I didn’t think it was going to be Phil. That’s the second time Phil’s popped up, making me think that he’s somehow pivotal to things. Maybe he’s a demon…
Anyhow, not content to almost get caught, Don decides to pickpocket Mother and make off with the key. I get the feeling she knew the second it happened, but then she knows all. They venture into the secret room and discover another secret door. This led them to the radio and a creepy collection of toys, including Conny’s bunny!
Meanwhile, Emma, Norman, and Ray have been looking at the book plates of several books in the library, all the previous property of a William Minerva. On the stamp there is a secret message written in Morse code. Surprised that Emma spotted it, she reveals that it was Phil, him again, who spotted it while reading a book that had Morse code in it.
Each of the words had little meaning individually, but given the circumstances as they now understand them it’s clear that someone is trying to send them a message. With this new information to mull over they head down to dinner, but Don and Gilda aren’t there yet.
Mother returns to her office and almost catches Don and Gilda, how they got out is anyone’s guess, although last week they did mention that the secret room is probably accessible from the office and Mother’s room. Having escaped they confront the others, knowing now that Conny is dead!
Emma confesses, Don punches Norman and Ray, and then storms outside, where everyone comes together and puts everything behind them, including whoever it was that’s watching them, possibly multiple people. The next day, Ray tells Mother that Norman wants to kill her, and then Sister Krone jumps the others in the woods and tells them she knows they know…
What hooked you? I feel like an awful lot happened this week, which was great because last week’s episode felt like a lot of standing around and talking. There’s still lots to figure out and plenty that we probably don’t even know we don’t know. I’m curious to see what Ray has been stashing under his bed, but Norman seems pretty pleased.
The tone was much more consistent this week, largely thanks to the absence of Sister Krone (for the most part) and Ray didn’t do his crazy face. Mother is still pulling the strings and making them all dance to her beat. I’m not convinced she is taking Ray all too seriously as he seems too
What was your favourite thing? This week it was the pacing and tone. We got through an awful lot of things, but nothing felt rushed. The night meetings by lantern helped to set the mood, even if I can’t help but feel like that’s not the best way to plan your top secret escape plans.
There were also a couple of brief moments with Mother and they were excellent. I get chills every time she’s on the screen. There’s just something so wonderfully sinister about her. She’s a great villain.
What was your least favourite thing? That is without a doubt all the super secret meetings that they keep having in the common rooms when no one else is around, or so they think. This is life or death. You don’t take chances unless you are intentionally trying to reveal things that will benefit you. That seems like something they would do, but I’m not convinced that is what’s happening.
Who was your favourite character? I’m not sure any one character really stood out in this episode. It could have been Emma, but then she revealed that Phil was the one who found the code. Or possibly when she revealed her plan to escape with everyone that we had to watch from a long view point and miss all the details. Yeah, I think Emma, but only because nothing else stood out.
Who was your least favourite character? I can’t help but feel like Don is a liability. He’s shown all too often that he is irrational and emotional. These are not going to help them best Mother. I also think Ray is being too cool about things with Mother. If I was her, I’d never believed that he had come to terms with his fate because I had given him some random stuff. It could be either of them this week.
Are you ready for more? It’s going to be interesting to see how they respond to Sister Krone’s offer at the end of the episode. Either way, I can’t help but think she is walking on thin ice. If they side with her, she’s going up against Mother, and if they don’t they’re going to have to kill her. There’s no way out of this now. Next week should be a hell of an episode.
