The arrival of another adult at the orphanage changes things for the children. Will they be able to adjust their plans in time to escape?
What did you watch? I managed to watch episode three of the Promised Neverland four minutes after it aired. No more shutting down the internet and hiding from spoilers for me. Don’t worry, I’ll go over what happened shortly. I’m just filling up the preview with
All right, that should do it. If you’re reading beyond here, I am going to assume that you’ve seen the first three episodes or are one of those people that likes spoilers…
What happened? Sister Krone joins the staff at the orphanage and immediately sets about getting to know the children. Mother tells her in no uncertain terms that she is just a guard to watch the children. She also confides in her that two of the children know about the harvest.
Next, we see Krone in her bedroom, which is sandwiched between the children’s rooms, talking to a doll. She is quite clearly insane and has plans to take over from Mother by revealing to the clients (demons) that the children know.
Emma, Norman, and Ray try to work out where the tracking devices might be. They come up with a number of theories about how they work, but it’s all speculation. They mention that they know the year is 2015 and what possible technology would be available, but can they really be sure? How can they trust anything they’ve been told at this point?
In order to prepare the children for the escape, while coming to the realization that some children will not believe them and could even warn Mother of their intentions, they decide to play tag as a way to train.
After one game Sister Krone offers to be it and gives the children twenty minutes to try and avoid her. While chasing Emma, she reveals that she knows that someone knows about the harvest. She also reveals what she knows about the children and even offers somewhat of a deal if Emma reveals she knows.
Emma, Norman, and Ray decide that there must be a spy within the children as Mother has eased up on the surveillance. Whether this spy knows why they are doing it or not is unknown at this stage. It certainly hinted at Gilda being the spy, although I think it was more that Krone suspects her of being one of the two children to know.
What hooked you? There were a lot of subtle details sprinkled throughout this episode. Unlike the revelation that Krone was after Mother’s job, which was not subtle. Krone’s wicked grin is anything but and her conversation with the doll was like a sledgehammer to the face.
One thing that Mother said to Krone that piqued my interest was when she handed over the files of the children and told her to memorize them, noting that it’s easier than getting a perfect score every day. This makes me think that they were both once in an orphanage (plant), possibly together.
I liked that Emma, Norman, and Ray acknowledged that the other children may not believe them, it was one of the things I brought up in the last episode review. Also, it’s interesting that there may be a spy as I’ve thought that too. It could be true or it could just the first signs that their trust in others is slowly wearing away, which is believable.
What was your favourite thing? I loved the moment that Norman and Ray won the game of tag with Norman standing on a rock towering over Sister Krone as Ray casually emerged from a bush and told her she’d run out of time. She was determined to make a point that the children would not be able to outsmart her, but that failed.
Then there was the moment at the end of the game where the others were waiting under the tree and we hear Krone’s internal thoughts as she looks at Emma, Norman, Ray, and then turns to Gilda but doesn’t say her name. I think it wants us to think that Krone thinks Gilda knows and that she might be the spy. Personally, I still don’t entirely trust Norman or Ray.
What was your least favourite thing? Getting a glimpse of the demons at the end of episode one was a powerful moment, seeing a group of demons enjoying a cup of tea as they talk about some event and presumably a ‘demon lord’ was a bit jarring. That information could have been revealed by Grandmother without the images and been twice as powerful.
It does give my theory that there is a demon society beyond the wall some credence, but I would have been happier without it. We did see the bunch of red flowers in the middle of the table, similar to the ones sticking out of Conny’s chest, so that definitely has some significance.
Who was your favourite character? I think Ray has the right idea. If they really want to escape, they’ve got to get rid of Mother and Sister Krone. Trying to get all of the children out with those two on their tails is going to be nearly impossible. If they can work out that Krone and Mother don’t get along, they can use that to their advantage.
Who was your least favourite character? Sister Krone! She is the opposite of Mother, replacing her pleasant smiles and sinister glances, with a grin the Joker would be proud of and half his sanity. Krone really is a comic book villain and that seems out of place with the dark tone the first two episodes created. It’s also taking away screen time from Mother who is far more terrifying.
Are you ready for more? This episode seemed to fly by in the blink of an eye. We’ve still not had another sensational moment like the end of episode one, but it’s building. The characters are moving into place as they prepare for the escape. There’s still lots for them to work out and it looks like time may go quicker than anticipated.
The addition of Krone is going to cause all sorts of issues, but probably not the ones expected. For one, she’s messing with Mother and that seems like a terrible idea. I loved the way Mother held Sister Krone’s face and forced her down so that she could look down on her, like a naughty child.
The power struggle may end up giving the children an opening, but I have a feeling that something bad is going to happen in the next episode. I can’t wait!
