Ulysses: Jeanne d’Arc and the Alchemist Knight (Season One)

Montmorency hopes to bring peace to the world, but first he’ll have to end the Hundred Years War between England and France.

What did you watch and why? This was one of the Fall 2018 seasonal series that I picked up. It was one that I was quite keen to watch and had high hopes for. I mean, just look at the header. It looks like it should be a lot of fun.

What’s it about? Montmorency is a student at a knight school along with his close friends Richemont, Phillippe, and Charlotte. They make a pledge to always remain friends and help each other out in their times of need. Montmorency is fascinated by alchemy and has managed to obtain a philosophers stone, believing that it will grant him the power to change the world.

When Richemont is drafted into the French army and sent to war, Montmorency tries to unlock the philosopher’s stone’s powers, but before he realizes seven years have passed. The English have made strides into France capturing Paris and other stuff… blah, blah, blah. Even the synopsis is boring.

Ulysses: Jeanne d’Arc and the Alchemist Knight – Second Chances (Episodes 5-8)

What’s happened since last time? So much has happened that it’s hard to really get a grasp on it. Montmorency continues to use Jeanne as a figurehead for the French fight against the English. Various members of his own side have abandoned them, Richemont and La Hire included.

France is divided and a former friend has activated another philosopher’s stone and become Ulysses Noir. Some other people go off in search of the Excaliber’s scabbard, which was hidden inside a nook in a tree…

Also, some other fancy warriors, working for the English defeat Jeanne, taking her heart so that she cannot heal… oh, but she can…

Have your feelings changed? After the first impression, I was a little disappointed. This had all the signs of being something entertaining, but my opinion has dropped considerably since then. It is completely and utterly boring.

They are trying to squeeze in so much stuff, it is becoming bloated and tired. There are too many characters popping up all over the place. They killed Jeanne, but not really. The story just bounces around all over the place. It’s impossible to bond with any of the characters.

Favourite character so far? Ulysses Noir. She doesn’t have much to say, but she looks good fighting. A totally impractical battle suit, but who cares she has a philosopher’s stone so she can get away with it.

Who do you want to see more of? Honestly, I’ll just be glad when this is over, but if I have to, I want to see some actual fights that aren’t the same two animation shots over and over again. I know the scale is big, but it’s so lazy when I can see the same animation walking beside itself. Argh! This is just such a bad series.

Are you going to continue watching? Only because there are only twelve episodes and I’ve already watched eight. I’m actually more disappointed with this than Conception because that was always going to be stupid. This series is bad on so many levels though. Heed my warnings, watch something else, anything else…

Ulysses: Jeanne d’Arc and the Alchemist Knight – First Impressions (Episodes 1-4)

What’s it about? Montmorency trained at a knight school, but his true love is alchemy. When the English invaded France his secret love is set to fight at the Battle of Azincourt. In his attempts to save her he summons a fairy queen to help him become immortal. Seven years later, he still hasn’t figured out how to do it, but maybe he could successfully transform another to stop the Hundred Years War.

What are your first impressions? I was actually a little disappointed. I’m not a huge fan of time jumps so ending the first episode with a seven-year jump wasn’t the best start for me. There were some fun characters, but I’m finding Montmorency to be a bit annoying. So far it’s been very disjointed, jumping forwards in time and location. Hopefully, it’ll come together as it progresses.

Favourite character so far? So far, it’s the mercenary La Hire, but only because she kicks ass and doesn’t back away from a fight. I’m not sure how realistic a pistol would have been in the Hundred Years War, but then there are fairies and whatnot.

Who do you want to see more of? Richemont needs to some more screen time. Her whole ordeal at the Battle of Azincourt, subsequent capture by the English, and then escaping only to be captured by the French deserved more than five minutes. Although, I’d be happy with more time for anyone if it means less Montmorency.

Are you going to continue watching? I probably will, but it’s bottom of my priorities as of right now. There have been a couple of good moments, but I’m not overly optamistic. I am hoping to be surprised.
