What did you watch?

When the Winter 2019 schedule was announced, The Quintessential Quintuplets popped up on my radar and one look told me that I was going to watch it. Ever since I started watching seasonal anime, there has always been at least one show that completely surprised me and for this season, it was this one.

What’s it about?

Futaro is a hard-working student who aces ever exam he takes. His family is massively in debt, so when an opportunity presents itself to help his struggling family out, he jumps at. He accepts a tutoring job, which has been advertised at five-times the going rate. It seems to be too good to be true.

It is! Now, Futaro has to try to teach rich quintuplets who don’t seem to want his help. Each is failing in their own special way, but before he can even get to the subjects he’s going to have to gain their trust and survive their endless lack of focus. What seemed like easy money, could just be the most difficult challenge Futaro has ever faced.

The Quintessential Quintuplets Title

Will we find out which one of the quints is set to become Futaro’s future bride? See if you can guess which of them is holding his hand when the music ends. I bet you get it right!

What’s happened since last time?

With the midterms out of the way it’s time for the annual school camp, but on the day of the camp, Futaro misses the bus to look after his little sister who isn’t feeling well. Luckily, the quintuplets aren’t about to leave him behind and take their limousine to pick him up so they can all make it to camp together. On the way they end up getting stuck in the snow and need to stop at a hotel for the night, but there’s only one room.

Finally, they make it to camp where Futaro and Yotsuba run the courage walk through the woods where they scare the other students. They manage to scare Itsuki a little too much and she runs off in the wrong direction. Then, Nino mistakes Futaro in his blonde wig for his relative (from the photo) and shows a different side of herself. But none of that matters because it’s almost time of the final day fire and whoever is holding Futaro’s hand when the music stops is likely to be the one he marries.

What’s happened since last time?

Futaro tried to shepherd the girls together for the fireworks festival, but no matter what he tried one of them kept wandering away. Finally, he discovers that Ichika has been working as an actress and must leave for a big audition. Before she does so, she gives him some advice that really hits home. In return, he inadvertently helps her with her audition.

Futaro’s efforts seem to be breaking down the quintuplets’ barriers, well, three of them anyhow. Miku, Yotsuba, and Ichika have agreed to take studying seriously, but Nino and Itsuki are still holding back. With the seemingly impossible task of passing midterms closing in on them, Futaro ends up spending the night at their apartment so they can get some last minute cramming in. What could possibly go wrong?
