30 Day Anime Challenge – Day 7: Who or what was the most annoying anime character?

Who or what was the most annoying anime character? Oddly, I find I have a pretty high tolerance for annoying characters in anime, but not in live action stuff. That said there is one character that instantly springs to mind and that is Raki from Claymore.

Why is that? So, the way I see it, there are quite a few annoying characters in anime, but for the most part, they are meant to be annoying. Take C-ko from Project A-ko for example. She is whinny and shrill, always pouting and making a fuss, but that is her purpose and she does it very well.

Raki, however, is supposed to be the support character to Clare. He helps her find her humanity and gives her a reason to keep going. That sounds good, but, he too is whinny and annoying. He’s constantly crying and shrieking. Seriously, dude, stop it!

It is so distracting that anytime I hear the voice actor in any other anime, I instantly dislike that character. Maybe that’s harsh, but that’s how it is. He showed up in One Piece voicing the leader of the resistance in Alabasta. Even though he didn’t whine or shriek, I still heard it. Damn you, Raki!

What if it’s just the voice you don’t like? No, I’ve read the manga and he’s just as bad in that and there’s way more to the story too. He’s just unbearable. Don’t believe me, feel free to read all 27 books. It’s well worth doing as they’re amazing.

Anything else you’d like to say? All that said, if you haven’t seen Claymore, you really should. It’s one of my favourite series. It follows Clare, a half-demon warrior who hunts demons for a secret organisation, but not everything they’ve told her is true. The design on the Yoma (that’s what they call the demons) is cool, but the Awakened Beings is something straight out of HR Giger’s mind. It’s dark and violent. Love it, not Raki!

Castlevania – Season Two

What did you watch and why? Way back in July 2017, I watched the first season of Castlevania, an anime based on the platform computer game. It was excellent, however, it only had four episodes. Season two is only eight episodes, so in reality, it’s the last two-thirds of season one.

One line pitch! The only thing standing between Dracula and human annihilation is a grumpy drunk with a bad attitude…

What’s it really about? Dracula married a human who wished to learn about science and become a doctor. She softened his heart, gaining access to untold centuries of knowledge. The church in its infinite wisdom burnt her as a witch. Dracula was not happy and now wants to wipe humanity from the face of the Earth. Standing in his way is Trevor Belmont, last of the vampire hunters, Alucard, Dracula’s son, and Sypha, a speaker with access to powerful magic.

Vampire Hunter D

What did you watch and why? This was selected by Jon as a part of the Otaku on Writing podcast where we analyze classic anime to inspire original fiction. Also, I loved this movie when I was younger, and if Jon hadn’t selected it, I would have done with my next pick.

One line pitch! Wandering vampire hunter wins big contract to protect farmgirl from a vampire noble…

What’s it really about? Set in the distant future where humanity competes with vampires and other creatures of the night. A vampire noble selects a human girl to be his next bride. Desperate to avoid the fate she hires a vampire hunter to kill the ancient and powerful noble.
