Conception – Second Chances (Episodes 5-8)

What’s happened since last time? Itsuki continues to seduce the Star Maidens and produce Star Children to help him defeat the evil entities that inhabit the dungeons so that he and Mahira can return to Earth. Sadly, that about covers it. There is nothing more to the story…

Have your feelings changed? So, I started watching this with little to no expectations. It was going to be stupid and a bit trashy, but I hoped it would still be enjoyable. There were a couple of noteworthy moments in the first eight episodes, but not much else.

With all the different Star Maidens that Itsuki must seduce, there really isn’t any time to get to know them or see a connection between them that isn’t superficial or forced.

It would have been better if the Star Maidens didn’t know and if they found out what was going on it would ruin the chance so of a Star Child. Everything is just too easy and they’re all expecting his advances. It’s utterly boring!

Favourite character so far? I went with Mana after the first four episodes because even though it was annoying, it did have some funny lines. That has either dried up or just stopped being funny. So, I don’t actually care about any of the characters. Even the Star Maidens are barely distinguishable from one another.

Who do you want to see more of? Something else…

Are you going to continue watching? This series has dropped to the bottom of the pile for me. It had the potential to be a raunchy comedy, but it’s just bland and boring. What’s even worse is that I went in with very low expectations, almost none existent, and it’s still managed to fail. There are four episodes left. I will force myself to watch them, once I’ve seen everything else, mostly because I’m not sure I can believe it’ll get any worse.

Conception – First Impressions (Episodes 1-4)

What’s it about? Mahiru asks Itsuki to meet her on the roof of their high school. She has some big news to confide in him. After revealing that she’s pregnant and still a virgin, they are magically transported to a parallel world. There, they learn that the only way to get back home is for Itsuki to defeat a dungeon boss with the help of Star Children that he will have to make with twelve Star Maidens and Mahiru is one of them…

What are your first impressions? This has to be the stupidest anime I’ve ever seen, and I watch a lot of trash. That said, I thought the start of the second episode was pretty funny where they revealed to Itsuki and Mahiru that you don’t actually have to have sex with the maiden to create a Star Child. Massive cock block for Itsuki there and it made me laugh. The thing is it keeps getting worse and worse, which ironically is making it funnier, in a this is so bad it’s good, but it’s not good!

Favourite character so far? For sheer comedy value, it has to be Mana, the horny flying red panda that is guiding Itsuki. And rereading that sentence is further proof of just how ridiculously stupid this series is. I have absolutely no hope that this will get any better, which is probably for the best. I’m just going to focus on laughing at how insane it is.

Who do you want to see more of? Just go for broke already and give us more Mana than we could possibly cope with. I’m sure Mana will be preparing something suitably distasteful for the finale, such as a Star Maiden orgy in an attempt to birth an army of Star Children. Seriously, I can’t stress just how utterly bonkers this series is.

Are you going to continue watching? At the moment this series is just above Radiant on my order of priorities, but only because it’s good to laugh at. Out of sheer morbid curiosity, I will probably force myself to watch the end, because something is going to happen. Something so stupidly brilliant that I will forgive… no, forgive is the wrong word… tolerate the series. That’s better. It’s a low ceiling I know, but it can’t get much worse… can it?

30 Day Anime Challenge – Day 20: What video game would make a great anime?

What video game would make a great anime? So, this is another of my favourite video games and one of the greatest series of games ever. As far as stories go, there is so much potential and so many ideas to be explored. It already has one of the most iconic video games characters and who would be ideal for an anime makeover. I think Tomb Raider would make a great anime.

Why is that? I think I kind of glossed over the finer points in the opening paragraph, but I’ll try to expand on that. Lara Croft would be an amazing anime protagonist. She’s smart and daring. Not to mention the body! She’s had a few variations as the games have evolved, but I think the style in the latest reboot is by far the best.

There are so many great stories from history that could be expanded on and embellished that you would never run out of material. All she really needs is a team to back her up and then the adventures can begin. Seriously, why hasn’t this happened already?

I’d want it to be fairly dark too. There needs to be the threat of ancient monsters and evil guardians. People need to die, blood needs to be spilt, and Lara needs to kick arse. Throw in the obligatory shower scene or bathhouse scene and it has it all.

Anything else you’d like to say? As always, I am available to work on scripts for the Tomb Raider anime series. So, if you know anyone that knows someone in the know, let them know about me. I can see it now. The steam clears. Lara lies back in the hot springs and belittles some poor chap with her sophisticated British accent.

30 Day Anime Challenge – Day 19: What anime would make a great video game?

What anime would make a great video game? I have been out of touch with video games since we moved to Canada from New Zealand. Because of the different power levels, screen formats, and the cursed region coding, I sold my Wii and PS3 and haven’t bought anything since we got here. So there’s a chance that this game already exists, but maybe not quite how I would envisage it. I think Attack on Titan could make a truly stunning game.

Why is that? Spiderman and GTA: Vice City are two of my all time favourite games. For Attack on Titan, I am picturing a large open world where you can do side missions while keeping up with the main story. You would have the Vertical Manoeuvring Equipment and be able to fly around the buildings and along the walls.

Obviously, there would be Titans. A shit load of Titans and they all want to eat you. Imagine you take a chance running across the open plans and suddenly a group of Titans appears in the distance. They spot you and start running. Your Vertical Manoeuvring Equipment is useless if you can’t make it to that group of trees in the distance.

I think that would be epic, heart-pounding entertainment. Alternatively, you could opt to be a Titan and run around eating people and smashing buildings. There’s a lot of potential here. I hope someone’s already done this. If not, I’m willing to sell my idea.

Anything else you’d like to say? In reality, almost any anime could make a fantastic game. All you would really need is the right style of game and an engaging story. I really need to get a new console. It’s been far too long.

Magical Girl Raising Project – Season One

What did you watch and why? Again, I was looking for something safe to watch while the kids were around. It had cute animation and magical girls… and oh no… not again!

One line pitch! Cute girls with magical powers murder one another because of a clerical error…

What’s it really about? Koyuki loves Magical Girls. She reads the manga and plays the online game. Then the in-game avatar comes to life and offers her the chance to become a real magical girl, giving her powers and abilities so that she can help people and collect magical candies. At least that’s how it starts. With one small announcement, it suddenly becomes a relentless battle to be the last one standing.
