Saturday Sketches: Week 7

Hopefully, everyone will be able to tell who this is. After all, it’s got to be one of the most iconic scenes in the series and possibly the most memorable in anime…

What did you draw this week? That’s quite the opening statement! I’m not sure if it is the most memorable, but surely, everyone should know this scene. It’s over the top in the most incredible way and just a hell of a lot of fun.

This sketch is from my favourite anime and it’s also my favourite character. Got it yet? Of course you have, it’s Saeko Busujima standing on top of the Humvee as they rush to rescue Komuro.

There’s a lot going on in this picture with her apron and hair flapping in the wind. It makes for a fairly dynamic picture, so I just hope I’ve done it justice.

This was another sketch in the larger A3 pad, so again I was able to get a little more detail in, which is essential with the apron, otherwise it would just be a big blank blob.

I’m pretty happy with it, although the head isn’t quite to the same scale as the body. Maybe, I’m just trying to be too perfect as it is Saeko. I’m sure I’ll find another excuse to draw her again, so it’s a good start for now.

Want to see me draw someone or something (I’m prepared to draw mecha or monsters too) then put in the comments and I’ll see what I can do.

Saturday Sketches: Week 6

It turns out we’ve been lied to. Now, I’m not talking about politicians or the media, although I’m sure they’re a part of it. I’m talking about ninjas. Everything we know about them has been a lie.

What did you draw this week? So, it looks like I’m taking inspiration from the series I’ve recently watched. This week I managed to squeeze in Senran Kagura, which is the new found source for everything ninja. It’s an interesting watch and I’ll be sure to get the review out soon.

Basically, in Senran Kagura there are good ninjas and evil ninjas, which admittedly is a bit on the nose, but whatever. All of the ninjas that the show follows are girls and there is a great deal of clothing shredding action…

Anyhow, as I was watching there was one character that stood out as one to draw, especially as I had said last week how I’d like to draw more of the body too. Well, this one has body, that’s for sure…

So, here is Haruka the evil ninja. Enjoy!

And you thought ninjas wore black, tight fitting clothing. It was all a lie!

For this sketch, I switched to an A3 pad, which for those that don’t know is twice the size of the regular A4 sheets. That’s close to twice the size of standard sheets of paper in the States too. That combined with the mechanical pencil means that I’ve been able to get more of the body in without sacrificing detail.

Saturday Sketches: Week 5

What did you draw this week? I just finished watching Goblin Slayer! and felt compelled to follow that up with a quick sketch. The review will be out shortly, but at the moment, I can tell you that I loved it. I think the first episode was so polarizing that for some the rest wasn’t as compelling, but I would disagree and I’ll get into that later.

For now, let’s just enjoy the Goblin Slayer in all his glory. I also felt the need to add a splash of colour to this sketch, because is he really the Goblin Slayer if he’s not covered in goblin blood?

It’s also the first male character I’ve drawn, although he could be a mecha with all that armour on. The hands are the only thing vaguely human about the picture. Still, I think it captures his rage, which is what I was going for.

I never realised just how cool his helmet is until I drew it. It has all those little details and curves that make it look like a dragon. I think I need to start doing more pictures from a distance. It’s great focusing on the details, but I feel like I need to get a full body on the page. Maybe next week.

Saturday Sketches: Week 4

What did you draw this week? Maybe, it’s too soon for an original sketch of an original character in a story I wrote. Maybe, but you try telling me that. After two weeks of requests, I decided I would bite the bullet and have a go at one of my characters.

Obviously, this means that you have no basis for comparison. What I will do, however, is give you a little more information about the character and the story she’s in.

This is Doctor Joan Crawford. She’s a marine biologist who has dedicated her life to finding proof of extraterrestrial life. You’d think this would be easy once mankind started to colonize the galaxy, but so far, nothing. That is until Joan is sent to a frozen world where a water extraction plant believes it’s found something in the water…

This is my first original sketch and one that would probably accompany chapter one when I turn my novella, Asteroidea, into a light novel. I plan on publishing the chapters on a weekly basis here in the not too distant future, so keep an eye out for those.

Again, I’ve focused on just the line work as I’m going to try to do the shading/colouring on my computer. Going to try and get some more action poses going for the rest of the images. Anyhow, I don’t think it turned out too bad. Any feedback is welcome.

Saturday Sketches: Week 3

What did you draw this week? Back in week 1, I also received a request from Winter, suggesting either Eureka from Eureka Seven or Arin from Trinity Seven. Now, I’ve not seen either of those series, sorry Winter, so I jumped onto Google images and checked them out.

This is again where I shall apologise to Winter, as I was looking through the images of Arin from Trinity Seven I kept noticing this redhead in the background. Something compelled me to further my search and long story short, I drew Lilith from Trinity Seven instead.

There is a good reason for this… well, just look at her. Other than the obvious, it seems like a good picture to prep me for a little project I’ve been planning for a while. If you read my Make It Anime post, you may know what I’m talking about. Anyhow, I’m going to start work on character sketches for a gender-flipped version of Predator. If they look good, maybe I’ll even turn them into a light novel!

Anyhow, here’s Lilith!

Once more, I’m pretty happy with how it turned out, but this one wasn’t as straight forward as Albedo. When I did my first outline, I accidentally made the torso far too long and it looked stretched. I was seconds away from starting again when I remembered to put my eraser to good use.
