Bell trains with Ais and Tiona, preparing for the Familia War. Meanwhile, Hestia buys him some time by skipping out on the meeting to decide the format of the war, while planning to rescue Liliruca.
What did you watch?
The Familia War is on, now they’ve just got to agree on how it will happen and what the stakes are. This is episode 3 of Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? II. After last week’s episode which featured Bell and Hestia running around the streets pursued by Apollo’s Familia, this week’s episode is a little bit slower, but get ready for lots of development. As always, there will be spoilers.
One of the surprise developments from last week was the Soma Familia fighting with the Apollo Familia. Well, it turns out they were paid to do so, but they also wanted to get Liliruca back and not because they miss her. No. They want to use her abilities to make money so that the head creepy henchman can buy Soma’s godly wine. Hestia, however, has put together a team to rescue Liliruca.
With the plans in place, Hestia finally showed up to the meeting of the gods to discuss the terms of the Familia War. Apollo wants Bell and nothing else and is so confident that he’ll win that he’s prepared to let Hestia take anything she wants. As a ‘neutral’ party, Hermes is chosen to draw the War Format from the lottery. Unfortunately for Hestia, he has pulled out the Seige and since Hestia only has Bell, Apollo has allowed her Familia to attack. After some consent from the other gods, Apollo graciously allows Hestia to add a non-Familia member to her side. Now, I wonder who that might be…
What did you think?
As you would expect, I loved this episode even though there was very little action. We saw Bell training on occasion with Ais and Tiona and then there was the attack on Soma Familia, but that wasn’t that action-packed. The real fun in this episode was watching the friends rally around Bell and Liliruca. It’s going to make the Familia War that much more entertaining, even though the OP animation has potentially spoilt it for us. I’ll get to that in a little bit.
What was your favourite moment?
Seeing how far Liliruca has come was excellent. She has really proven her faith in Bell, especially after managing to get Soma to acknowledge her, even if it was to make her drink his godly wine and shut up. He had no expectations that she would be able to drink the wine and then ask for his help. He thought it would shut her up so that he could get back to making his wine. He was wrong. Liliruca managed to ask him to stop the fight and allow her to leave the Familia. After the transfer was complete, Hestia rubbed it in Soma’s face by telling him what his Familia had lost.
What was your least favourite moment?
All right, it’s time to talk about the OP. The music is fine, I don’t have a problem with that. It’s not as catchy as season one, but whatever. I need to talk about the animation sequence that accompanies it. If you don’t want some potential season two spoilers, skip on to the next section now. Still here. Fine, let’s do this. It only really makes sense now that I’ve seen two episodes, but here’s what I’ve been able to work out. Hestia Familia wins the war and takes Apollo’s mansion as their prize. Welf, Liliruca, and Mikoto all join Hestia Familia. It’s all there in the opening sequence… Now, this may be a misdirection, but somehow I don’t think so. Anyhow, if it is true, then that’s really annoying. Of course, this episode then went on to confirm the second half…
Who was your favourite character?
I loved Lili in this episode. She showed amazing growth and strength to be able to stand up to Soma. It’s not surprising as we’ve seen how she’s changed and become an integral part of Bell’s life. She’s even managed to sway Hestia which is impressive considering her initial intentions were to steal the knife that Hestia had to beg to get made for him. Then, finally getting her wish and officially becoming a part of Hestia’s Familia was a great moment and I can’t wait for Bell to find out.
Who was your least favourite character?
Zanis. That’s the creepy guy from the Soma Familia with the glasses who plans on using Liliruca’s abilities to make more money so he can buy more godly wine. It’s little wonder that one of his own men gave Liliruca the keys to escape because he hated Zanis. I hate Zanis. Everybody hates Zanis. That’s some slick writing. He was barely in it and so for everybody, and I’m certain that it’s everybody, will hate him!
Would you like some more?
So was anyone really surprised that Ryu Lion was going to be the non-Familia member of Hestia’s team? Anyone? No, I didn’t think so. That said, I am absolutely delighted because she was one of my favourite characters from the first season, so more Ryu is only going to be a good thing. I do have one little gripe and that is Mikoto. It makes perfect sense for Welf and Liliruca to want to join Bell, but it seems a little sudden for Mikoto. Maybe it’s still part of the guilt of the passing parade, maybe there’s been a ton of development off-screen. If it’s the second, I would have liked to see this developed more. I’ll take it, I just wish it didn’t feel as forced.
