It’s like Overlord but with more meat on the bones. So much more meat! They summoned a Demon Lord to be their slave, but it didn’t work out!
What did you watch and why? When the new season of anime was announced, How Not to Summon a Demon Lord was top of my list and one look at the promo image should tell you why. That’s right, he’s a demon lord…
What’s it really about? A loner, gamer is summoned into a fantasy where he takes on the life of his character, Diablo complete with his physical and magical abilities.
What hooked you? I enjoyed a lot of different aspects of this show, but I was hooked in by Shera and Rem’s relationship. They were both outcasts from their societies and started with the same level of distrust of each other. So, when they summoned Diablo and their command spell reflected back onto them, binding them together, I knew it was going to be entertaining.
What was your favourite scene? Any time Diablo got to use his immense power was great, but I think my favourite one was when he defeated Edelgard and the entire Fallen army. It’s hilarious when someone brags about their power-level and it’s laughably below Diablo’s.
What was your least favourite scene? There were several really twisted characters in this show. Most notably Shera’s brother. That guy was all sorts of crazy. However, my least favourite aspect, as with a lot of these harem style shows, is that the protagonist, Diablo in the case, don’t get over their overwhelming fear of the female body. I’m not sure why they’re so terrified, but you would think after a few episodes it wouldn’t be as big an issue for them.
Who was your favourite character? After all that, Diablo was still my favourite character. As I said before his power-levels make the fights oddly more entertaining, even as outmatched as his opponents are.
Who was your least favourite character? And that would be Shera’s creepy brother Keera. He was just crazy for the sake of it. I’m sure they could have come up with a more interesting reason for him forcing her to return to him.
Which character that needs more screen time? We definitely need to see more of Edelgard… not like that, get your mind out of the gutter, although I’m sure that’ll happen anyhow. Her fight with Diablo was a highlight for me, so I’m down to see her fighting again.
What was your favourite quote? The Shocker!!!
Is it similar to any other anime you’ve seen? Diablo’s power-level reminds me of One Punch Man or Overlord, although neither of those are harem comedies. There are some similarities with High School DxD, but in reality, it’s a bit of a mix, so if you liked those, you’ll probably like this.
Would you like another season? Absolutely. I love this style of anime and get a real kick out of the protagonist being stupidly powerful, and I have no idea why. It would be good to see Diablo grow to be more confident around the girls. He doesn’t have to become a super pervert, just more relaxed.
What elements of the story will you use as inspiration for a short story? Having a character that is so much more powerful is an interesting concept. In writing, it seems like a terrible idea, because characters need flaws and weakness, but these can come in other forms.
