Hinomaru Sumo (Episodes 17-20)

Hinomaru Sumo Title

When Hinomaru lost in the individual tournament, his dream of becoming a pro sumo looked to be over, but his team aren’t about to let him give up just yet!

What’s happened since last time?

The Odachi High sumo club has reached the semi-finals in the team tournament where they will have to face off against the number one school and Hinomaru will get a second chance to defeat Tennoji. In preparation for the match, they practice with Sada and his team, who they defeated in the preliminaries.

First we see the captain, Shinya faces off against a much smaller opponent who uses Aikido. The battle is long and hard, but ultimately Shinya loses. Then Kei, the smallest and least successful of the team goes up against a man mountain and deploys a series of tricks, before being declared the winner, only for it to be contested and declared a draw. They will have to start over, but Kei is injured and can’t put up much of a fight.

Kunisaki faces off against their second strongest wrestler in an epic battle that has firmly cemented him as my new favourite character. Following that former thug turned sumo wrestler, Yuma has to win in order to keep the match alive, but he’s up against a Mongolian beast. Somehow, he manages to win his match and take a step towards redeeming himself, leaving Hinomaru to face off against Tennoji once more. It’s another epic fight.

Have your feelings changed?

For whatever reason, I held back on catching up on Hinomaru Sumo. Maybe, I was worried that it wouldn’t be able to keep the intensity up or I was just tired from my vacation. Either way, I still absolutely love this series. It is utterly inspiring and a ton of fun. I’ve said it before, but the fights are so intense and strategic. I have definitely gained a new appreciation for sumo wrestling.

Who was your favourite character so far?

I alluded to it before, but it’s definitely Kunisaki. His fights are so entertaining and it’s incredible to see how much he’s grown from the first time we met him. I know it’s Hinomaru’s show and he’s still great and all, but Kunisaki really is awesome to watch.

Who do you want to see more of?

I just can’t wait for the final. There are four episodes left and I’m pretty sure all of them will cover the final. I’m expecting even more epic battles and hopefully some surprises. This entire series has been a delightful surprise and I’m glad I took a chance on it.

Hinomaru Sumo Kunisaki

Are you going to continue watching?

Absolutely. I will be cheering Odachi High on from my armchair and no doubt getting pretty animated for the finals. I may even mute the current OP and play the original one to get even more amped up. I still can’t believe they changed it to ‘Be the Naked!’ Seriously, what were they thinking?
