Highschool of the Dead (OVA) – Drifters of the Dead

They’ve escaped to a small desert island and there’s no sign of zombies anywhere. There’s also no food and little in way of clothing!

What did you watch? No doubt released to appease the rampant fans demanding a second season of Highschool of the Dead, Drifters of the Dead is an eighteen minute OVA and I just watched it.

What happened? After the escape at the end of season one, Takashi and the group found a rowboat and took to the sea, but they got tired and lost so they stopped at a small deserted island off the shore of Tokonosu.

On the island, they found a small beach cabin with some bottled water and a variety of swimwear. Relieved to find themselves free from zombies for the first time in ages they throw on some bathing suits and enjoy the beach while the guys try to find some food.

Takashi has no luck but manages to gather dried leaves for a fire. Hirano comes through with a collection of fish he caught spearfishing. They are gathered around the fire, looking forward to their meals when Marikawa notices a funny smell.

The dried leaves were hydrangeas which can produce a hallucinogenic state when inhaled. Everyone begins to get a little crazy before Takashi and Saeko flee the fire to wait for the effects to wear off.

What hooked you? This isn’t season two, but it’s the best we’ve got so far. It’s light on actual zombies, but is a lot of fun. It was nice to see the characters able to goof off and enjoy themselves. As an OVA this one has much more fan-service.

Don’t worry, it’s not just girls. The only bathing suit available to Takashi is a cock sock, or a banana hammock, or a budgie smuggler, or whatever you want to call it. Hirano, however, dons a fetching one-piece.

The girls all seem to have squeezed into the smallest bikini’s imaginable, so if you can take your eyes off Takashi for a moment, it is quite enjoyable.

What was your favourite thing? I think the funniest thing was Hirano’s reactions to the hydrangeas. While the girls all seemed to turn their amorous attentions to Takashi, Hirano seemed to be having too much fun with a broom…

What was your least favourite thing? The fact that it wasn’t season two, and that even though they again teased a second season at the end of the credits, it still hasn’t materialized. At this stage, I’d happily take a movie or just more OVAs. There just needs to be more.

Who was your favourite character? I’m going to pick Saeko just so I can get an image of her in the little white bikini into the post. It was disappointing not to see more zombies, but I’ll take what I can get.

Who was your least favourite character? In this episode, it has to be Takashi. Despite all of his prowess in the series, he completely fails here. Not only does he look incredibly awkward in his speedos, but he fails to achieve anything, except maybe fending off a number of zombies while hallucinating!

Are you ready for more? Yes! More zombies, more Highschool of the Dead, more Saeko, more of everything, please.
