After a long war, the Fairy Soldiers find themselves in a society that no longer needs nor wants them. Those that can use the power of the fairies are hunted as criminals.
What did you watch?
When I looked at the spring 2019 schedule, this was the first title that jumped out at me. It looked dark and gritty. I was then convinced to watch Fruits Basket and then found myself watching Demon Slayer: Kimetso no Yaiba. So, that’s it. These are the only shows that I will be watching and reviewing as they air. This should give me more time to binge older shows and write some of my own fiction.
Marlya rushed out to help and discovered that the thief was the girl that saved her from the burning village (back in the flashbacks). Anyhow, she’s a Fairy Soldier and so is the head of security. They fight, their fairies fight, and then Marlya ends up bonding with another fairy that had been in the auction and disrupts their fight. The thief, Veronica escapes and the head of security, Free reveals that he works for a secret government agency and that Marlya can join him or be arrested.
What did you think?
I wasn’t blown away, which is a shame because I was expecting more. It was interesting and has a lot of potential, but it spent a lot of time explaining the fairies and how it all works. On top of that, I really didn’t like the animation of the fairies. It was obviously CGI and really stood out from the rest of the animation.
What was your favourite moment?
It was probably during the fight between Free and Veronica. Free, realizing just how strong Veronica is, says that he’s not going to hold back anymore and draws his second sword. Well, I’m a sucker for swords so that was a good start, although I would question why anyone would hold back rather than just hitting them with all you have to begin with.
What was your least favourite moment?
That would be the CGI fairies, although it’s worth noting they look much more like demons than fairies and Demon Soldiers would be much cooler than Fairy Soldiers. I also find it annoying when they show the flashbacks and put the year in the fantasy world. So, on top of watching the animation and reading the subtitles, I’ve got to do some mental arithmetic at the same time. Just say nine years later.
Who was your favourite character?
Veronica, the thief with the long dagger and freaky looking fairy. She looks like she’s hard as ice and just a cold. I did have a little chuckle when she was running in the leant forward position like any other anime ninja, but it also looked cool so I’ll allow it.
Who was your least favourite character?
At the moment, it’s the protagonist Marlya. She just seemed a bit clueless and unprepared for someone that was supposed to be a security guard for an illegal mafia-run auction. I’m sure she’ll get some growth, especially now that she has a fairy of her own and has teamed up with Free.
Would you like some more?
I had already made up my mind that I would see these shows through to the end. On top of the usual need to complete the series, I now have the need to complete the series of reviews. I can’t just stop in the middle. That said, even though I wasn’t completely blown away and the CGI is a little off-putting, there was enough to make me want to keep watching, even without my completion anxiety. I hope it gets better, because I had high hopes for this series.
