What did you watch?

First things, first. If you’ve not yet seen episode 7 of Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, I urge you to leave this page, watch it, and then come back. I will wait. Trust me, you’re going to want to see this for yourself. Seriously, this episode is so good, I watched it twice! All right, you have been warned. From here on there will be spoilers…

Demon Slayer Kimetsu No Yaiba Episode 7 Muzan Kibutsuji Shush

What happened?

At the end of the last episode, Tanjiro and Nezuko were fighting against the demon that could split itself into three and had the ability to travel outside of space. With Nezuko bursting into the fight late, Tanjiro had forgotten just how strong she was. Realising he could leave her to defend the humans, he stepped into the demon’s realm, a swamp-like world with little oxygen and nowhere to stand.

But that’s not about to stop Tanjiro. He trained exclusive at altitude and is accustomed to surviving in low oxygen levels. His sword technique is water-based, so it makes sense that fighting in water may come with some advantages. Tanjiro defeats two of the demon’s bodies and races to help Nezuko with the third. He arrives just in time and having incapacitated the demon, he asks it about Muzan Kibutsuji to the demon’s terror!

What did you think?

Wow! This episode was insane and in a good way. We started with the conclusion to the fight that began in the last episode. With the demon slain, Tanjiro took to the road only for his crow to arrive with his next assignment. This time he must head to Tokyo and once there his discovery is utterly mindblowing! A familiar smell interrupts Tanjiro’s dinner and what follows next is my favourite moment!

What was your favourite moment?

Tanjiro and Nezuko have arrived in Tokyo where the size of the city and the number of people is too much for a poor country boy. After escaping the hustle and bustle of the city, Tanjiro sits down with a bowl of udon, but before he can enjoy his food a familiar smell grabs him and drags him through the streets. It’s the same smell that infested his home when he found his family murdered by the demon.

When Tanjiro catches up with the Muzan Kibutsuji and stops him in the street, a little girl turns to Muzan and asks her daddy what’s wrong. Then a woman walks towards them, asking Muzan if he knows the boy. Tanjiro can only stare in horror as he realizes that Muzan is hiding in plain sight. He’s a demon, but his family are humans. Then with a flick of the wrist, Muzan scratches a passerby, faster than anyone but Tanjiro could see. The man stops and then dives onto his lady friends and bites into her shoulder.

Muzan may not know who Tanjiro is, but he knows what he is and in one swift action he has shown Tanjiro what he’s up against. Surrounded by people all of whom could be turned into demons in the blink of an eye. Muzan is calm, calculating, and brutally vicious. This is about to get very interesting!

Demon Slayer Kimetsu No Yaiba Episode 7 Muzan Kibutsuji Surprised

What was your least favourite moment?

So there was one small thing that bugged me in this episode. When Tanjiro was fighting the demon that could move around space, it left a large puddle on the ground, an entrance to its alternate realm. Tanjiro knowing nothing of the space steps inside without a moment’s hesitation. For one, that’s crazy. I don’t care how strong you are, the demons could easily have ambushed him as soon as he entered. However, for some strange reason, they didn’t and then rather than just wait for him to run out of air they attacked. The scene was undoubtedly cool to watch, but it was probably the daftest thing in the series so far.

Who was your favourite character?

This might be controversial, but I loved Muzan. This guy is pure evil and it is great to watch. In their brief interaction, I think Muzan did enough to make Tanjiro reassess everything he knows. Even with a human family as a shield, Tanjiro should have realised that he had a chance to end it all. Muzan is the only demon that can make demons. Even if it meant not being able to save his sister, he must have thought about taking the swing there and then.

I think Muzan knew this and that’s what prompted him to make a demon, selecting his target with complete indiscretion. He cared little for anyone and was willing to kill anyone and everyone if needed. And now, Tanjiro knows that. Surrounded by people, how many could Muzan turn during a fight with Tanjiro?

Who was your least favourite character?

There weren’t that many characters involved in this episode, but the girl that Tanjiro saved at the end of the last episode was like a cardboard cutout in this episode. After the fight, she knelt against the walls, appearing to be unconscious, but still upright. Sure, she’s probably in shock, but I felt like they could have made her do something, even if it was just to have her leaning on the guy.

Would you like some more?

The way this episode ended, I am literally chomping at my bamboo demon gag to get to the next episode. I can’t wait. In fact, I may attempt to do a Nezuko and sleep until next Saturday, if someone could wake me once it’s out. This series may be a fairly simple shounen style story, but I’m loving it. Every minute of it. Even Tanjiro’s udon looked great. I cried a little when he dropped his bowl on the floor.

  1. Yes, definitely need the next episode now. That was intense.

  2. “This might be controversial, but I loved Muzan. This guy is pure evil and it is great to watch. In their brief interaction, I think Muzan did enough to make Tanjiro reassess everything he knows. ”

Suddenly, Isabella has competition — _serious_ competition — for villain of the year!

That “brief interaction” not only made Tanjiro reassess everything — I did, too! The show had been perfectly and brilliantly hitting its tropes. And then this?

Simultaneously out of nowhere and perfectly in perfectly in character.

“I am literally chomping at my bamboo demon gag to get to the next episode”

Great way to tie back into the show!

    • When I saw the title of this episode at the end of the last one, I knew it was about to get interesting. Did I think he would be as sinister? No not even close. The way he watched Tanjiro as he infected that guy. He knew Tanjiro saw him do it and he knew he couldn’t do a thing about it.

I feel like I’m going to have to do an in defence of Muzan post. I’m already coming up with ideas and crack pot theories for it.

  3. Muzan was great in this episode, he perfectly set up the atmosphere around who he is and what Tanjiro is really up against.

Plus he looks cool too, I can’t wait to see more of him, and I want to see what Tanjiro intends to do now.

    • Yeah, if he wasn’t so tied down to saving Nezuko and being a nice guy, the smart money would have been to cut Muzan down there and then, but that’s not who Tanjiro is.

Unfortunately, now Muzan has shown him what he can and will do without hesitation. I think their rivalry could be epic.
