With the morphed demon slain, Tanjiro spends the rest of his time searching for demons and asking them how to make a demon human again.
What did you watch?
Episode five of Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba picked up immediately after episode four. It has been my favourite series this season, but will it be able to keep up with this week’s episode of Fruits Basket which was excellent!
We were lucky enough to see Tanjiro defeat the morphed demon again. Even after everything the demon did, Tanjiro held its hand and asked that the demon no become a demon in its next life. The level of caring and empathy is rare in shounen, especially for the enemy. As soon as the demon vanished, the spirits of Urokodaki’s students appeared before heading home.
Tanjiro spent the rest of the trial confronting demons and asking them how to turn a demon back into a human, but it was clear that none would answer him. If anything only the morphed demon appeared to have the control to hold a conversation for long. It looks like the answer if it exists will only come from an old and powerful demon!
What did you think?
I really liked this episode. Sure, it didn’t have the flair or action of the last one, but it did give us a lot more information to think about. We saw the four survivors from the trails… just four out of at least twenty! After they’d picked their ores for their Ninchin swords, we saw what I can only assume is the leader of the Demon Slayers and she mentions that five survived… was it a mistranslation or is there a fifth that we didn’t see.
What was your favourite moment?
Having survived the trails and made his way home, a tired and exhausted Tanjiro dropped to his knees as Nezuko emerged from Urokodaki’s hut. She runs to hug her brother. Then Urokodaki walks up behind them and wraps his arms around both of them. He’s crying! It was a very emotional moment where you could see the relief on everyone’s faces. Tanjiro because Nezuko is awake and other’s relief that Tanjiro survived and made it home.
What was your least favourite moment?
In a way, I kind of wish that the trail had gone on a little longer. It’s great that things have moved along, but I really would have liked to see how hard it was to survive for seven days on the demon infested mountain. Admittedly, I could have watched a whole season of that, but that’s just me.
Who was your favourite character?
There’s the obvious ones. Tanjiro is still a very interesting character. His motivation makes him a reluctant demon slayer and the way he empathizes with the demons is a nice touch. It was also good to see Nezuko awake and hopefully she’ll be more involved for a while now. Other than them, I found the blacksmith with the clown mask to be funny. He was nuts for sure, but it made me laugh.
Who was your least favourite character?
So we saw four survivors from the trails and it felt a little cliched. There was one character who seemed a little surprised that he survived and was set on an inevitable path to his death. Then there was a quiet and mysterious girl who said nothing and almost hid in the background. Finally, we had the guy that just wanted his sword and cared for little else. A potential rival or future ally possibly!
Would you like some more?
Tanjiro has just been assigned his first mission to find the demon that is causing the disappearance of numerous girls and kill it. It looks like things are about to get real, although I can’t wait to see how Tanjiro and Nezuko (hopefully) tackle this challenge.
