Arifureta: From Commonplace to World’s Strongest (Episode 9) – Dragon Slayer

Arifureta From Commonplace to World's Strongest Title

They’ve made it into the mountains and located the Count’s son, but they also found a black dragon and it seems oddly determined to kill the Count’s son. So much so, that’s it’s ignoring Hajime completely.

What did you watch?

So, the last episode of Arifureta: From Commonplace to World’s Strongest was actually one of my favourites, despite the heavy exposition and Hajime still being a jerk for the most part. I had hoped that episode 9 of Arifureta: From Commonplace to World’s Strongest would build on that and not do what episode 3 did after episode 2. Well, I guess it’s time to find out. Here come the spoilers. Get ready!

Arifureta From Commonplace to World's Strongest Episode 9 Yue Shea and Hajime Driving with the Sensei and Students

What happened?

Hajime, Yue, and Shea took Sensei and her students along with them on the quest to find the Count’s son. It was an odd decision, but that’s what happened. Not long after getting into the mountains, Hajime located the site of a battle. There were giant footprints and the ground was scorched. There were no human remains. Then, Hajime sensed someone nearby and ordered Yue to part a waterfall. Behind it, they found a cave and inside was the Count’s son. Hajime offered his best attempt at a pep talk and then led the boy outside.

Once out in the open, a dragon flew into sight and instantly started to attack, focusing on the Count’s son. This gave Hajime the chance to get out some of his big weapons and attack back. They exchanged blows back and forth until Hajime managed to bring it down with the help of Shea. Then, unable to do any actual damage to the dragon, Hajime took a giant metal spike and rammed it up the dragon’s ass…

What did you think?

I’m done! This show is just so utterly stupid it’s beyond belief. I don’t even know where to start, but this was the worst episode with the poorest CGI and more story that makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. Hajime is so confused by what’s going on and his attempts to be even edgier that ever, that Yue had to remind him of his own rules. I’m not even sure what they’re going for now. I hope it wasn’t laughs, because this was just unbearable.

What was your favourite moment?

This is almost impossible, so I’m going to go with the old favourite of Shea whacking things with her giant hammer. Try to ignore the fact that this is the exact same animation frame from episode 7… I kid you not, see for yourself – click here!

What was your least favourite moment?

The CGI in this show seems to be getting worse. None of the monsters have been particularly impressive, but this dragon is on a new level of bad. It’s bad enough that the story is a complete mess, but when it’s not good to look at too, then you’re in real trouble. After last week’s episode, I am extra disappointed, but I really shouldn’t be surprised.

Who was your favourite character?

It was quite the relief when the CGI dragon took on a human form and we didn’t have to stare at that abomination any longer. I’m watching the subtitles and even then its mouth didn’t move in time with the words… Anyhow, Tio Klarus, the dragon appears to be a complete masochist and manages to piss off Hajime. The second part of that is more than enough to gain some respect. It’s not a lot mind you, but it’s enough to win this episode.

Who was your least favourite character?

I’m going to give it Hajime for a number of reasons. One, I don’t like the guy. Two, he has no strategy. It’s just bang, bang, bang. Is it dead yet? Nope. Bang, bang, bang. Hasn’t he got all these other skills and abilities from the labyrinth at his disposal? As I said earlier, I’m over this. I really can’t see there being any improvement at this stage.

Would you like some more?

No, I really don’t and I cannot wait for this series to end. I’m only now watching it because I’ve started reviewing it and I am going to finish. What if it suddenly becomes amazing? It won’t, but I’m going to have to stick around just in case. Maybe, if I’m really lucky, Shea will hit me with the hammer and put me out of my misery! This is just really bad.

  1. Bruh that one seen with the metal rod was just hilarious. Also the Dragon is Darkness Negative 2.0.

    • I’m glad you enjoyed it. It just wasn’t for me. I’m not loving this series, there have been a couple of moments I’ve enjoyed but otherwise I’ve been more frustrated than anything.

I don’t like Hajime so that’s not the best start and I can’t get over how terrible the CGI is.

The dragon as a person was great. I just hope she stays in that form going forwards.

    • Well I just love how bad it is. It’s weird with me as I just see this a comedy that should not be taken as anything else.

Also the CGI is just amazingly bad at this point that I truly believe that the studio is doing this on purpose. Making sure that this anime never gets a second season ever.

    • Haha! So far, mission accomplished. I do feel that if they’d had a longer season and taken a little more time developing the characters and the world (and not bothered with CGI) it could have been a great isekai action adventure.

Realistically, everything that happened up to them getting out of the first labyrinth could have been a whole season on its own, but like you say, maybe they desperately don’t want a second season.

  2. That’s true. But I feel like the author wanted to flesh out the harem characters as quickly as possible. So maybe if they made it a 2 cour. They could have paced it better.

Also, this to me now is a contender for comedy of the year now.
