30 Day Anime Challenge

What anime scared the crap out of you?

I honestly can’t think of any anime that has scared me. One of my other guilty pleasures is watching horror movies. I used to finish work on a Friday, walk home via Blockbusters, rent as many horror movies as they’d let me have, and then stay up all night watching them. Good times! There is, however, one anime that really pushed the boundaries on this one. It was in Berserk: The Golden Age Arc 3.

Bersek Hawks

Why is that?

Guts and the Band of the Hawk have just rescued Griffith from the dungeon. Griffith has been tortured mercilessly for several years and has almost given up on life. His tendons have been severed and his tongue cut out. When he attempts to end his own life, he accidentally opens up a portal to a dark realm, taking the Band of the Hawk with him.

There he is granted unmeasurable evil powers if he’s willing to sacrifice his companions. This is where it gets really fucked up! Demons descend on the Band of the Hawk devouring them with ease. Guts taps into his inner rage and charges at Griffith determined to kill him for what he’s done, but a giant demon bites down on his arm, keeping him at bay.

Griffith, in his new demon form, rapes Casca, shattering her sanity. Guts can only watch on as the demon holds him in place. The rage inside grows until Guts can take no more. He hacks off his own arm with his broken sword and attacks Griffith. Casca and Guts are then both saved by the Skull Knight who takes them back to the real world. Casca never recovers and Guts leaves in search of Griffith. It’s insane but so good.

Anything else you’d like to say?

Berserk: The Golden Age Arc is fantastic. It’s dark and gritty, harsh and brutal. I’d say it’s a must-watch, it’s that good. There is nothing more to say on the matter. Go and watch it now.
